I. Product Definition and Core Functions
Highway guardrail net is a protective isolation facility specially designed for highway traffic scenarios. It is processed into a mesh structure from metal or composite materials and fixed with posts to form a protective system. Its core functions focus on traffic safety and environmental isolation, specifically including:
Protective buffering: Absorb the energy of vehicle impact, prevent vehicles from leaving the road or entering the opposite lane, reduce the degree of casualties in traffic accidents, and is especially suitable for risky sections such as expressways and mountainous roads.
Boundary isolation: Clearly define the scope of highway land use, separate motor vehicle lanes from non-motor vehicle lanes and sidewalks, prevent pedestrians and livestock from entering the driving area at will, and at the same time prevent debris on both sides of the road (such as branches and garbage) from invading the road surface.
Traffic guidance: By using bright colors (such as green and blue) and regular structures, it assists drivers in identifying road boundaries and enhances road visibility at night and in bad weather (rain, fog).
Environmental adaptation: On scenic area roads and sections within ecological protection zones, a transparent design can be adopted, integrating protective functions with natural landscapes to minimize visual damage to the ecological environment.

Ii. Materials and Manufacturing Processes
1.Main materials
Base material types: low-carbon steel plate (Q235/Q355, tensile strength ≥375MPa), stainless steel (304/316, salt spray resistance ≥1000 hours), aluminum alloy (6061-T6, density 2.7g/cm³), and high molecular composite material (PVC + glass fiber, anti-aging grade ≥UV50). Among them, low-carbon steel has the highest cost performance and accounts for more than 70% of the market share. Stainless steel is mostly used in highly corrosive coastal areas.
Surface treatment:
Hot-dip galvanizing: Zinc coating thickness ≥85μm (outdoor) /60μm (indoor), adhesion ≥5MPa, no red rust after 500 hours of salt spray test, service life can reach 15-20 years.
Electrostatic powder coating: Powder coating thickness 60-120μm, color selectable (RAL color card), impact resistance ≥50kg · cm, weather resistance complies with GB/T 1865 standard;
Dip coating: The thickness of the PVC coating is 1.0-2.5mm. It has good low-temperature toughness (no cracking at -40℃) and is suitable for cold regions in the north.
2.Manufacturing process
Mesh processing
Welding category: Automated welding is carried out using a spot welding machine, with a weld point diameter of ≥3mm, no false welding or missed welding. After welding, slag removal and grinding treatment are performed.
Weaving category: Hook mesh (wire diameter 2.0-4.0mm) is made by spiral weaving process, with the uniformity deviation of the mesh ≤±5%. The Dutch mesh (wavy shape) is formed by cold rolling and then welded, with the flatness error of the mesh surface ≤±3mm/m.
Frame forming: The frame is made of rectangular tubes (20×40mm/30×50mm, with a wall thickness of 1.2-2.0mm) or Angle steel (30×30mm), processed by a CNC bending machine. The diagonal deviation of the frame is ≤±2mm.
Assembly and fixation: The mesh is connected to the frame by bolts (M8/M10 hot-dip galvanized anti-theft bolts) or welding. No less than 3 fixing points are set per meter, and the connection strength is ≥1.5kN.
Iii. Product Specifications and Application Scenarios
| Type | Structural features | Applicable scenarios |
Wave beam guardrail fence | It is composed of cold-formed corrugated steel plates (commonly double-wave and triple-wave), circular/square columns, and anti-blocking blocks, with strong overall rigidity | Expressways and first-class highways (core protection scenarios, with outstanding anti-collision capabilities, capable of guiding vehicles to rebound smoothly after impact) |
Double-strand wire guardrail fence | The mesh is welded from longitudinal and transverse wires on both sides and connected to the columns through clips. It features a lightweight structure and flexible disassembly and assembly | Secondary/tertiary highways, rural roads, and isolation on both sides of the road (low cost, easy installation, suitable for basic protection requirements) |
Frame guardrail fence | Rectangular metal frames are welded around the mesh (welded mesh/woven mesh), and the frames are fixed to the posts by bolts. Its stability is superior to that of double-sided wire | Municipal roads, highway toll stations, and service areas (which need to withstand minor scratches or human damage and have slightly higher requirements for structural strength) |
Cable guardrail fence | It is composed of 4 to 6 high-strength steel cables, columns and brackets, with a flexible structure and no rigid mesh | Mountain roads, sections near cliffs or water (with good buffering performance, which can reduce rigid damage during vehicle collisions, and clear visibility without blocking the road conditions) |
Steel plate mesh guardrail fence | The mesh is formed by stretching steel plates (with rhombic hole structure), featuring high strength and good air permeability. Its surface can be treated with powder coating | Municipal expressway and tunnel entrances and exits (Strong wind resistance, not prone to dust accumulation, suitable for areas with strong winds or light pollution) |
Iv. Classification by material
| Material type | Core component | Advantages | Disadvantage | Applicable environment |
Hot-dip galvanized guardrail fence | Low-carbon steel base material + hot-dip galvanized coating (zinc coating thickness ≥85μm) | It has strong anti-corrosion properties, can withstand high and low temperatures, and has a service life of up to 15 to 20 years | The cost is higher than that of cold galvanizing, and the surface is only silver-gray with a single color | Rainy, coastal, and severely cold northern regions (with strong resistance to moisture and freeze-thaw cycles) |
Dipped plastic guardrail fence | Low-carbon steel base material + hot-dip galvanizing (primer) +PE/PVC plastic coating | Rich in colors (green, blue, yellow, etc.), with excellent anti-corrosion properties and a smooth touch | The dipped plastic coating is prone to being scratched by sharp objects and is likely to age in high-temperature environments (> 80℃) | Municipal roads and scenic area roads (which need to take into account both aesthetics and basic anti-corrosion) |
Stainless steel guardrail fence | 304/316 stainless steel (containing chromium ≥18%, nickel ≥8%) | Resistant to acid and alkali corrosion, rust-free, and requires no frequent maintenance in the later stage | It has a high cost (about 3 to 5 times that of hot-dip galvanized mesh) and relatively weak impact resistance | Coastal areas with high salt fog and roads around chemical industrial parks (strongly corrosive environments) |
Aluminum alloy guardrail fence | 6061/6063 aluminum alloy (containing magnesium and silicon) | It is light in weight (only 1/3 of steel), resistant to oxidation and easy to process | It has relatively low strength and cannot withstand the impact of heavy vehicles | Urban sidewalk isolation and non-motorized vehicle lane guardrails (in scenarios without heavy collision risks) |
V. Key Technical Parameters
1.Basic parameters
| Parameter category | Core indicators | Explanation |
| Guardrail height | Roadside guardrail ≥75cm; The guardrail in the central divider is ≥60cm. The sidewalk guardrail is no less than 100cm | Insufficient height can easily cause pedestrians or non-motorized vehicles to climb over, while too high a height will block the driver's field of vision |
Mesh size | Double-strand wire guardrail: 5cm×10cm/10cm×15cm; Frame guardrail: 5cm×5cm/10cm×10cm | If the mesh is too small, it is prone to dust accumulation and clogging; if it is too large, it cannot prevent small animals (such as hares) from entering the road |
Wire diameter | Double-strand wire guardrail: Transverse wire 3.0-4.0mm, longitudinal wire 4.0-5.0mm; Frame guardrail: Wire diameter 3.5-6.0mm | The thicker the wire diameter, the higher the strength of the mesh, but it will increase the cost and overall weight |
stadn Column specification | Circular column: Diameter 48mm/60mm (wall thickness 2.0-3.0mm); Square columns: 40mm×40mm/50mm×50mm | The wall thickness of the post is insufficient and it is prone to bending. It needs to be matched with the type of guardrail (for example, the corrugated beam guardrail is equipped with 114mm diameter posts). |
2. Performance parameters
Impact resistance
Highway guardrail: It must withstand the impact of a 10-ton vehicle at a speed of 100km/h. The guardrail should not break or severely deform, and the vehicle's rebound Angle should be ≤20°.
Rural road guardrail: It needs to withstand the impact of a 5-ton vehicle at a speed of 60km/h, the mesh does not fall off, and the inclination Angle of the post is ≤15°.
Anti-corrosion performance
Hot-dip galvanizing: No red rust after salt spray test for ≥500 hours;
Dip coating: No powdering or coating peeling after salt spray test for ≥1000 hours.
Stainless steel (304) : No rust after neutral salt spray test for ≥2000 hours.
Wind load resistance performance: Suitable for guardrails in coastal and windy areas, they need to withstand winds of ≥ level 12 (wind speed 32.7m/s), with no tearing of the mesh and no toppling of the posts.
Vi. Product Selection Guide
1. Select the type according to the road grade
| Road grade | Core requirements | Recommended product types | Material suggestions |
| Expressway/first-class highway | High impact resistance, high corrosion resistance and long service life | Wave beam guardrail net, cable guardrail net | Hot-dip galvanizing + plastic coating (double anti-corrosion layer, extended service life) |
| Secondary/tertiary highways | Moderate protection and controllable cost | Frame guardrail net, double-strand wire guardrail net | Hot-dip galvanizing or single plastic coating (balancing performance and cost) |
| Rural road | Low cost, easy installation, and basic protection | Double-strand wire guardrail net, simple frame guardrail | Ordinary hot-dip galvanizing (economical and practical, meeting basic needs). |
| Municipal road | Beautiful, scratch-resistant and easy to maintain | Steel plate mesh guardrail net, aluminum alloy guardrail net | Colored plastic coating, stainless steel (matching urban landscape) |
2. Select the model based on environmental conditions
Rainy/coastal areas: Prioritize stainless steel (316) or hot-dip galvanized + plastic-coated (double anti-corrosion) to resist the corrosion of salt spray and moisture on the guardrail.
In the severely cold northern regions: Select hot-dip galvanized material (with strong freeze-thaw resistance, avoiding coating cracking caused by low temperatures);
Mountainous areas/sections near cliffs: Choose cable guardrails (flexible cushioning, reducing the risk of vehicles falling off cliffs, and providing clear visibility without blocking the road conditions on curves).
For the roads around the scenic area: Choose colored plastic-coated guardrails (such as dark green or off-white) or aluminum alloy guardrails to balance protection and landscape coordination.
