Gabion mesh, commonly referred to as gabion box or Reno mattress, is a flexible steel wire mesh product widely adopted in hydraulic construction, slope reinforcement and flood protection projects. Manufactured with high-tensile low carbon steel wire via double twisted hexagonal weaving technology, gabion mesh forms a stable retaining structure after being filled with natural stones.
Compared with traditional concrete hard protection, gabion mesh belongs to flexible ecological protection material. It can adapt to foundation deformation, resist water flow impact and allow natural water and soil exchange. Therefore, it is extensively used in river regulation, channel renovation, mountain slope protection and reservoir reinforcement engineering.
According to surface treatment technology, gabion mesh is divided into three mainstream types.
First, hot-dip galvanized gabion mesh. It features cost performance and stable anti-corrosion ability. It is suitable for inland river projects, common slope protection and ordinary water conservancy environments with a service life of 15 to 20 years.
Second, zinc-aluminum alloy gabion mesh. Also known as Galfan gabion, it has much stronger corrosion resistance than ordinary galvanized wire. It adapts to humid environments, mountain stream projects and areas with slight salt and alkali corrosion.
Third, PVC/PE coated gabion mesh. The outer plastic protective layer effectively isolates oxidation and chemical corrosion. It is the best choice for coastal engineering, saltwater areas and severely corrosive water environments with ultra-long service life.
Gabion mesh can deform adaptively without cracking or collapsing when the foundation settles unevenly. The overall structure remains intact under external impact, greatly improving project safety.
The gap between internal stones realizes natural drainage, reduces water pressure behind the retaining wall, avoids piping and leakage risks, and protects the stability of river embankments.
The stone gaps accumulate soil gradually, which provides growth conditions for weeds and vegetation. The restored natural vegetation forms a permanent ecological revetment, realizing the integration of protection and landscape.
Gabion mesh products are folded for packaging and transportation. On-site installation only needs unfolding, assembling, binding and stone filling without large mechanical equipment. Local stone materials can be used, which greatly saves construction and transportation costs.
The double-twisted weaving structure disperses pressure evenly. The interlocking stones inside the mesh box can resist strong water flow and storm impact, which is ideal for flood control and river training projects.
Common wire diameter ranges from 2.0mm to 4.0mm. Standard mesh holes include 60×80mm, 80×100mm and 100×120mm. Custom sizes and wire thickness are available according to project requirements to meet different load-bearing and anti-scour standards.
Gabion mesh has become an indispensable material in modern water conservancy and geotechnical engineering due to its flexibility, durability, ecological performance and convenient construction. It perfectly solves the defects of rigid concrete protection and meets the development requirements of ecological environmental protection engineering.
